Summary
It doesn't seem like this is the case because the media has consistently portrayed how Latinos are progressing and always highlighting the one or two Latinos who are the exception to the rule. As examples, personalities such as Henry Cisneros, Alberto Gonzalez, Jimmy Smits, Jennifer Lopez and other personalities are always used as examplars of success. These personalities are held up as shining examples of how Latinos have arrived.
The retreat participants then discussed a broad array of strategies and actions that had to be pursued over the next 20 to 30 years to turn things around. In a later column I will share with you some of the percentages and numbers that are making everyone anxious. I will give you a hint of why everyone seems so concerned with the educational decline of Latinos. In the State of Texas alone by 2020 Latinos will be the majority population with fewer and fewer going to college. This means that the state's economy will suffer in many ways if the majority of its workers are undereducated. An undereducated work force means less money invested by business, which leads to less money available for taxing, which means lower revenues, which means less money for education and other essential services. In short, if we don't do something about investing in education at all levels in Texas today; we will be facing an economic downturn of major proportions in the future.See the full content of this document
