Social Security Disability Rules Can Be Very Confusing

Summary

Just because you can't do the job you used to do doesn't mean you are disabled. You get benefits only if you can't do any kind of job at all. So if you can't work in construction anymore because of a back injury but you can do a sit down job, you aren't disabled. But if your back is so bad that you can't even sit for very long then you may be disabled and qualify for cash and medical benefits.

There are two disability programs, Disability Insurance Benefits (DIB) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI). DIB is based on your work history. If you worked at least five years out of the ten years before becoming disabled you earned a benefit. But if you didn't work at least five years you may qualify for SSI. But here again there is a catch. Under the SSI program you can't have any other source of income such as a spouse's earnings unless he or she makes less than about $20,000 a year.
