Performance Highlights Life of Mexican Artist

Summary

"The life of [Frida Kahlo] is very important to Mexican culture," said Allan Horwath, producer and director of the "Frida" performance, concerning why the company chose this particular show. "It's an important part of culture for people to know about."

"A lot of people know about Frida, but they know just the basics, that she was a painter, that she painted uncommon paintings," said Alicia Zepeda, a singer in the performance, "but with this play you can see why she painted like that. Her paintings are not the most beautiful paintings you will see, but they show what she was feeling, what she was living through. When the play ends, we have several people who leave crying, the story plays with your emotions."

It was important to communicate to the audience what kind of person Frida was, explained Zepeda, "It was hard to get the people involved with the acting because it wasn't just about playing a woman, who was a drunk, or had polio it's Frida Kahlo, You needed to have that feeling that it was Frida. She was a different woman. At the time, she was doing the opposite of doing what women did. What we were trying to help people understand is who Frida Kahlo was in reality."
