A simple definition would be a clouding that develops in the cristalin, that is a part of the eye that resembles a convex lens. This clouding can also appear on the envolope part of the cristalin. Cataracts form when there is build-up of insoluble proteins in the lens. This results in yellowing or browning of the lens which does not transmit light well.
Symptoms include gradual decrease in vision, change in color perception, and glare or halos around lights especially at night. Your ophthalmologists can diagnose cataracts during a dilated eye exam. Sometimes only a change in your glasses is needed to improve your vision.Cataract surgery is performed in an outpatient or hospital setting. After the cataract is removed, an intraocular lens, made of acrylic, silicone or hydrogel material is placed in the eye to help the eye focus. Your ophthalmologist will perform a special procedure before your surgery to calculate the power of the intraocular lens. After the cataract surgery, the patient is able to go home the same day. Medicated eye drops are started before the surgery and continued for a few weeks after surgery. Once stable, a new prescription for glasses is then issued.See the full content of this document
