Hud Invests $20 Million in Saha

Summary

[Shaun Donovan] spoke to a crowd of future and former residents, San Antonio Housing Authority staff and city leaders. He thanked all involved in the modernization of the apartments. "We are staring at a potential second great depression," he said. "But I'm here at the Chatham Lewis apartments because it's clear the recovery is still strong."

The second round of funding, $5.35 million, will be used for improvements for: Victoria Plaza and OP Schnabel Apartments; Fair Avenue Apartments and Matt Garcia Apartments; Villa Tranchese; Parkview Apartments and College park; Jewett Circle and Colonel Cisneros Apartments; Kenwood North; Villa Hermosa; Lila Cockrell Apartments; and Madonna Apartments.

Former resident and president of the Residents Council, Robert Alvarez, is delighted with the changes. "This will be much safer and more comfortable for the renters," he said. "Everything is new, and we will have safer parking, more security inside and better gates outside," he explained. Alvarez plans to move in as soon as the apartments reopen in January, and hopes to be elected president of the Residents' Council again. "We should be moving in next January, and hopefully by February or March we can restart the Council," he explained.
