[Henry Cuellar]'s first stop was at the San Antonio Fire Department Repair Shop on South Zarzamora to hear from personnel about the problems they face with a city budget that they said more often goes to hiring more firefighters and not enough toward support operations such as hiring more administrative assistants and mechanics, and other department personnel. A key example of this lack, according to Alfredo Aleman, President of the San Antonio Professional Firefighters Mechanics Association, is the city's stable of 12 mechanics that currently work on the Fire Department's entire fleet of vehicles.

"The struggle sometimes on some of the grants is on First Responders is, 'Where's the threat,' does New York City have more of a threat than San Antonio?," he said.
