Balancing Our Needs, Paying Our Bills

Summary

Congress is in a very similar situation right now - like a family who can't decide how to divide up their paycheck, Congress is faced with a huge stack of our nation's bills. Rather than making a plan to pay what is due, the Congressional leadership looks like it will put off making any decisions until after the election.

For the recipients of Social Security and Medicare and other mandatory funding programs, there is no need to worry - federal law requires that those checks be mailed out even if Congress hasn't passed a spending plan. But for other critical government programs, such as the LIHEAP energy funding that will ensure that families and seniors don't go without heat in the coldest days of winter, the failure of Congress to act puts government programs that serve all Americans in at risk.

By shirking our duties and failing to make the tough choices that need to be made about our nation's finances, the Congressional leadership is failing American families. The decisions we make in Washington affect working families in South Texas and throughout the country. They make difficult decisions everyday, and the Congressional leaders should have the courage to do the same.
