Summary
The AIDS Memorial Quilt began with a single panel that was created in San Francisco in 1987. The quilt is composed of more than 147,000 individual panels which commemorate the life of someone who died of AIDS. The AIDS Memorial Quilt is considred the largest piece of ongoing community art in the world and has been sewn by thousands of friends, lovers, and family members across the nation.
